In the case of characters that are mechanically inclined, made of much more advanced technology than is available on the island, or simply require said technology to function, the Storyteller will enable their continued function via a special symbol engraved on the offending technology. This symbol cannot be transferred or replicated to other technology, and requires proximity to certain green pools to "recharge," so to speak. Recharges are required once every two weeks.
