Rules

Rules
Compliance with these rules is a requirement to remain in the game. Reading these rules is part of our application process, so please ensure you are familiar with them!

1. Be courteous

RP is a social activity. In order to maintain a comfortable and cooperative environment, we ask that players conduct themselves with maturity and respect. Dislike should not cause you to treat another player with a lack of courtesy or respect.

LifeAftr's mods have zero tolerance for harassment and bullying; disagreements can and may happen, but are expected to be handled civilly. Instances of racism, homophobia, transphobia, misgendering, and et cetera will not be tolerated, neither ICly nor OOCly. LifeAftr gives priority to a safe atmosphere that respects the comfort of its players; please consider the people behind the characters.

2. Be fair

LifeAftr is geared to provide equal opportunities in regards to character involvement; however, this depends upon you to approach your play whilst considering how these opportunities can be shared.

This means no godmodding (i.e., controlling another character without giving them the opportunity to react; for example, “Jack punches Joe in the face.”). It also means no metagaming (using information ICly that you learned through OOC methods like locked posts or OOC content).

Powergaming is also frowned upon, which can include behaviors such as unrealistically optimized abilities that trivialize the setting’s challenges, using powers or abilities that were not documented in the application at all, and other unsportsmanlike conduct. Please keep in mind that powers not outlined in your application cannot be used in game.

3. Communicate effectively

As a predominantly text based activity, misunderstandings can and may occur due to interpretations of tone or unintended implications. In the first instance, we ask that you communicate directly with another player if you have issues with their conduct both ICly and OOCly.

Should behavior be in violation of any of the rules, it's important to ensure that you can provide the mods with links, screenshots, or other context that can assist us in understanding the full picture.

Game-wide HMDs are currently not compulsory; but if such a mechanic becomes necessary, it will be implemented.

4. Be active

Not only are players rewarded for their activity, it’s the lifeblood of a successful game! While our AC policy is lax, all players are required to maintain an active presence in the game and tag their character's involvement; so that the mods can confirm said presence.

We understand that life happens and should take precedence over RP, so please announce any absences here.

5. Be in character

The character(s) you apply for may resemble you very little... and the same can be said for your fellow players! IC conflict can be a very rewarding development, however, please ensure that this does not bleed-over into OOC interactions.

It’s important to consider what really makes your character(s) tick when deciding what they do or how they respond to situations. Ask yourself “what would they do?” instead of what might be more splashy and dramatic, as that’s not always appropriate. Consistent characterization also makes the stories you make with other players even better!

If you feel that someone may be OOC, try communicating directly and privately with the player. You should always constructive criticism to help them improve. We encourage you to ensure you have a screened HMD on your character's journal, or an alternative contact for discussing such issues should they arise.

If you have concerns about your own IC performance, remember that your writing (much akin to ours!) is a work in progress. There's no shame in wanting to continue improving your skills. Seek feedback with an open mind, or canon review where you feel it's necessary!

6. Consider your audience

LifeAftr contains some sensitive content, such as potential injury and death. In other cases, character's backgrounds may contain potentially triggering or disturbing material.

It's important to take care of each other when such material is present. Posting a permissions post and advising of what could potentially arise with your character is a great way to inform those interested in playing with you of what could be in store- in game, content that is over a PG-13 rating should be placed behind a cut, with warnings in the log description.

Of course, you should also utilize those handy-dandy subject headers for threads! For example, a thread where shocking violence occurs that results in terrible damage should have in the subject header “cw: violence, body horror, gore” or any appropriate warning thereof. Mind, not every situation requires a content warning; "CW: hot cup of tea" is probably not appropriate.

Any sexual content should not be played in LifeAftr's comms; if you and an interested party are looking to play out sexual content, please use a private inbox, or musebox.

7. Plot responsibly

Upcoming events and ideas with fellow players can be very exciting; we encourage you to discuss these and to let your creative wings spread wherever possible! Keep the below rule in mind, however, as IC actions should have IC consequences.

If you’re considering contributing a plot or event, thank you for your contribution to the game! If your plot is going to impact multiple characters or potentially cause large waves, please communicate with the mod team before acting on your idea.

Some plots may not work as originally presented due to multiple factors, including future events or unknown elements of the game plot. We'll always do our best to work with you on having your idea implemented as much as possible!

8. Actions have consequences

In a setting like this, the actions your character takes can sometimes have long term or permanent consequences. Please be aware that taking risks, such as going off into the unknown alone, have a greater chance of going wrong for your character than for those who work together.

Chances of survival are much greater within a group. This also offers easy access to more opportunities for RP. While it’s possible to go it alone, it is much, much harder. This also limits one’s options when events and plots occur.

Avoiding a consequence, such as a death penalty by not commenting to the death page, or ceasing activity until the penalty time-frame is over will result in an extension of the penalty.
