Applications

Applications
Due to LifeAftr approaching endgame, Applications are currently CLOSED, with the exception of returning players and/or characters.

Additionally, please note that applications received on Saturdays may take up to 24 hours to receive a response, particularly if an app is received last minute. Applications received after 12pm est on Saturdays will not be processed until the following weekend.

Prior to starting your application, please check the Taken Page to ensure they are not already in play. Please ensure that you have Reserved the character you wish to apply for; keep in mind that we do not accept application challenges!

There are a total of four application templates which can be used to apply to LifeAftr:

Canon Universe: your standard application. For a character with a solid canon background who is not being brought in from another game, this is the application for you.

Lesser Background: for characters who may not have much canon background to go off of, such as a silent protagonist or NPC. For further clarification on what constitutes for the lesser background app, check our FAQ.

Original Character: for all your OC needs!

CRAU: if importing from another game, please use the CRAU app. This applies whether the character is canon, lesser, or OC. This is also the template to use if you are re-applying your character with their previous LifeAftr memories.

Note: If importing an OC or Lesser Background character, refer to the respective application form to see the judging standards for each field.

Personality: As much or little as needed to provide sufficient insight into the character’s personality.
Abilities: The character's talents, skills, and/or powers. Keep in mind that some powers may need nerfing in accordance with the FAQ. Additionally, be warned that any powers not outlined in this section and used in-game (unless learned through IC development) will be treated as powergaming. Players are free and encouraged to suggest nerfs; if they do not, the mods will provide information on nerfs upon your character's acceptance.
Inventory: Please list the items upon your character's person on arrival, including the amount of each item (i.e., how much ammunition they might have). A brief explanation of each item's purpose and function is greatly appreciated. Keep in mind that all items will have suffered water damage unless sealed, and that technology in particular will have been affected as detailed in the FAQ even if sealed.

Sample

A written RP sample to present your character's voice. This may be done through an existing RP thread or a mod-issued Q&A, the processes of which are described below. Please note that in the interest of processing all applications in a timely manner, we will no longer issue a Q&A by request to applications that have already provided a thread sample. Applicants must choose one or the other. As TDM rewards are tied to thread samples, it is highly recommended to use a thread from the TDM as your sample if you have one.

Thread Sample: Thread samples do not need to be within Lifeaftr’s TDM, however, we do ask that they be pertinent to the style of character you’re apping in (Ex: if CRAU, they should be from the game they are coming from). Additionally, the sample must have been threaded within a year prior to the application date.

Q&A: For those new to playing their character, who have been out of RP for a time, or who just prefer something different, you may request a Q&A from the mods to be answered ICly. When submitting your app, just note your preference for this here, and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible!

Lesser Background
Character Information

Name:
Series:
Appearance: Image link(s) or a written description of the character’s appearance.
Age: If no canon age has been provided, a headcanon age or estimate is acceptable.
Canon Point:
Canon History: The character’s role in their canon, how they relate to their world, and how they got to that point in their life. This can be detailed or ambiguous, but should show appreciative insight into the character. This section should primarily be written out for canons with significant player impact on the story, but we would appreciate the inclusion of a link to a wiki or information page, if one exists.
Canon Personality: Detail and assess as much about the character’s fundamental personality as possible using examples from canon material.
Personality Shifts: If the character is from a series with significant player choice, or if they’re an NPC who is affected by said choices, detail this particular version’s thought processes. Leave N/A if the character is a true silent protagonist with a mostly linear story or an NPC unaffected by player decisions.

To submit your application, please enter a comment using the template below.

We ask that you put your character name, canon, application type, and whether or not you have reserved your character in the subject header. For readability purposes, we also ask that you link to your application on your journal instead of pasting it into the comment itself.

Only submit your application once you are sure it is complete; as apps are processed throughout the duration of the round, we have no way of tracking if any edits are made after the fact. Likewise, we will only be issuing TDM rewards to those who have proofs at the initial time of submission. TDM rewards are eligible for the TDM corresponding to the current app round only, and require a sustained thread as opposed to merely a top-level.

Those that do not respond to their revisions, Q&A, or acceptance notices within 72 hours will be automatically rejected.

Sorry about that! And apologies if this is rambling, I had to write it up on mobile.

Power edit
Naiads are water elemental demons, and can be used to summon water for combat uses. Yukio has been seen to summon eight naiads that surround an opponent and summon a water column to trap them. It is physically exhausting for him, he's inexperienced with summoning in general, and he has only used it twice in the series, once in a life-or-death battle with an opponent who used an extremely powerful fire demon and once to try and "kill" himself to try and trigger weird spoiler Satan-related abilities that have been totally nerfed for RP (I say "kill" because he basically was trying to trick the ????? nonsense into thinking he was dying while also not actually putting himself at risk of dying, because the summoning ends if the summoner goes unconscious).

In the series he can only summon them by using special bullets, which he didn't have in LC because of a ban on bringing metal weapons in, but there were no other nerfs given. He could hypothetically draw out the summoning circles but that would take time, or he could make more summoning bullets or summoning throwing knives or something, but he doesn't currently have any.

Another edit to powers that no one asked for I'm so sorry.

Because of the nature of the magical transformations in Lost Carnival, Yukio has picked up a sensitivity to iron. While not as bad as some people who have been there longer, contact with iron (and to a lesser extent, iron alloys) will result in first degree burns, increasing in severity with prolonged contact.

Personality clarifications
When it comes to fae truthfulness and characterization changes, Yukio's pull point from his game is from within a day or two of actually admitting that he's lost his ability to lie. He's still kind of in denial about it, but also very strongly intending to work around this new limitation. Even before he really realized what was going on he started using more misdirection and evasive answers than outright lying, so he's just going to double down on that. He really doesn't like how much he hates even the idea of lying now, but he's just accepting it grumpily and working with it.

Yukio's CR actually didn't change him much. It was mostly adults who he viewed as kind of useless (like Herbert West, who had the official role of Doctor in the game but was a mad scientist with no bedside manner) who made him feel like he had to step up and take responsibility (like canon, but more of his own volition than because of an assignment), and castmates who stayed pretty close to canon interactions. His twin brother Rin was also in game, and tried to get Yukio to open up a bit more, but that mostly just resulted in a few moments of Yukio kind of trying to talk about things and then shutting that line of discussion down. His coworker/sister(??) figure Shura was also in the game, but she was even less successful than Rin at getting Yukio to open up.

There were some game events that changed/impacted Yukio, to varying degrees. Early on in his Carnival stay, the Carnival traveled to a place called Wismuth, where magical girls powered by Creation were fighting evil magical girls powered by the Void. Yukio was selected to be a magical boy Star Guardian, with a powerset based around healing. While this event did grant him a subtle change to the makeup of his soul (he's now Creation Touched) the biggest impact it had was in setting the tone for his experience in the game. It sort of stripped away a lot of his suspicion of the situation (not that he ever really trusted the Ringmaster) and let him decide to accept the terms of his contract instead of looking for a way out of them, just by being a situation where he was part of a team that was genuinely trying to help, instead of there being some kind of ulterior motive.

Events between Wismuth (in March) and Shabondamashii (in August) were fairly low impact on Yukio. He maintained the medic tent, learned some new skills in terms of being a doctor, worked on learning magic and new weapons, and generally just kept himself busy. The 1:2 ic:ooc time ratio meant he didn't have a lot of time for development aside from just trying to be the most responsible person in the Carnival.

And then Shabon happened....

Okay so the net result of the events I'm going to recount is that Yukio's issues were exposed to people and he hated it, he hates talking about emotional issues, and also he hates himself and now people know.

Essentially, the Carnival went to visit a bathhouse town (think Spirited Away) for rest and relaxation after a plotty event. And then chaos happened. Characters were split into Light and Dark halves, where "Light" meant their idealized selves and "Dark" was all the character traits they wanted to be rid of (light and dark couldn't share the same personality traits). Light Yukio was calm, confident, easily accepting of situations, and not really concerned about others. Dark Yukio was scared of basically everything, openly talked about hating himself, and pretty willing to discuss his feelings about other people.

Which meant that he did talk about some things, like how much the Light half wanted to kill the Dark half, even though both halves were entirely aware of the problems that would cause (if one half died, the other wouldn't really be a functioning person). After the two halves were reconnected, Yukio promptly never talked about that again. Yukio experiencing something traumatic and never talking about it again is a pretty constant thing both in canon and in this CRAU.

As for other traumatic things Yukio is never talking about again, after Shabon (and reluctantly putting himself back together) came Polaris, a fae-run experimental facility that ranked Carnival members based on their work ethic. Yukio quickly moved up the ranks until he reached the rank of Delta, where he was promptly removed from the group, experimented on (that's where he got the magitech eye) and assigned to observe the lower ranking test subjects. He then helped work towards bringing the entire system down from within, but he did sort of deliberately leave everyone (including his family) behind in order to gain more power, and while he's always been aware about that part of himself it's not something he really wanted anyone else to know about. Thankfully, once again, it wasn't something that ever got brought up afterwards.

And then came the Summerlands and a brief vacation and Yukio got confronted by Shura about the fact that he can't lie anymore, and he really doesn't know what to do with that but (as usual) he hates it.

So in a nutshell, Yukio experienced some bad things and he's currently just in conceal don't feel mode (like in canon) but hasn't exactly been pushed to the breaking point he gets pushed to in canon (yet). He's in a sort of "I guess I exist and I'm going to keep doing that" holding pattern, and will continue to be there until something happens that would cause things to change.
