Prologue
Where is this, exactly?

Why, this is the beautiful land of LifeAftr! Haven't heard of it? That's a shame, as a good portion of the islands would make a rather fascinating tourist location.

You, of course, are going to be here for a lot longer.

LifeAftr goes by varying names among the local cultures in the region, but all signify the same thing. This collection of islands, seemingly in the middle of nowhere, is almost fairy tale-esque in its vibrant blue seas, tropic locations, and ancient temples. Each island has its own environment that could be radically different from it's neighbors, from jungles to frozen tundras, to vast deserts and swampy marshlands.

How many islands there are is unknown, precisely, and the cultures found upon each are as radically different as the locations themselves. At times, the occupants of an island may be perfectly hospitable, in others, the only reason you're invited to lunch is to become lunch itself.

What is obvious from the get-go is that the first island on the list, Ensō, was not exactly prepared for the new arrivals on its soil. For now, the initial location available to characters is seemingly empty of any other permanent settlers, providing large stretches of beach and a variety of temples and buildings in a disparity of disrepair to use as makeshift accommodations. Whilst other islands can be seen in the far, far distance, the utilities required to have even the smallest forward party are not yet available.
My character is dead/dying/can’t survive without X item!

As eccentric as the Storyteller seems to be, that doesn't mean they like bringing in walking (or...not walking) corpses to ruin the beautiful landscape of their island beaches. Characters who have died will return to a reasonably healthy state, as will those mortally or grievously wounded prior to arrival.

For those who require something specific to survive, such as medication or a wheelchair, the Storyteller will also hook you up with an initial month's supply of what you need. Participation in the non-compulsory AC or via the Items Request page can then be used to hook your character up with an ongoing repeat each month, or the tools required for repairs.

In the case of characters that are mechanically inclined, made of much more advanced technology than is available on the island, or simply require said technology to function, the Storyteller will enable their continued function via a special sigil engraved on the offending technology; likewise, characters who must feed on other sapient creatures to survive will find themselves marked with a special sigil as well, to quell those urges. This symbol cannot be transferred or replicated to other technology, and requires proximity to certain green pools to "recharge," so to speak. Recharges are required once every two weeks. Said pools are available in LifeAftr, which you can read more about on the Settings page.
Can my character bring anything with them to the islands?

Your character is more than welcome to bring along anything that they can carry, though there are some downsides to bringing things from home.

Technologically speaking, it appears that exposure to the waters surrounding the islands upon arrival has some...inadvertently unfortunate side-effects. Whilst most items still appear to function, somewhat, the more advanced the technology, the more likely it's not quite working as it should.

Items with simpler functions, such as pokeballs, will continue to work perfectly fine, even if they appear to be a little waterlogged. As an item's intended use becomes more complex, the more likely it becomes for it to not function correctly- a smartphone, for example, may have a distorted music library, or all of its contacts wiped. A laptop's screen goes off at random, multiple programs stop working-- and in the case of truly advanced technology, doesn't function at all.

The rule of thumb when considering how damaged a character's items are is to look at how many functions it possesses. A sentimental item like a photo may be miraculously intact, but that Harley Davidson you risked life and limb to drag out of the water? Heck no. In any situation where you may be unsure of whether an item should be damaged or nonfunctional, please discuss it with the mods, or make a note in your application!
Can my character bring along a spirit/familiar/Pokemon, etc?

Characters are allowed to bring along a companion or two, within reason! Up to two companion animals and familiars, including Pokemon, may be brought onto the islands: both at the time of application, and overall.

All companion creatures are expected to adhere to the same nerfing standards as player characters are, to include factors such as size, flight capabilities, etc. If you aren't sure what constitutes as needing a nerf (or to what degree a nerf is needed), feel free to contact a mod! Additionally, companions who die in-game will need to be requested back by characters via our Items Request page; keep in mind that the larger or more powerful the companion, the more favors it will potentially cost.

In regards to Pokemon: At this time, legendary, mythical and ultra beast pokemon may only be brought into LifeAftr if proven that the character canonly owns them. Due to the excessive powers of these Pokemon, extensive nerfs will apply. Also, please keep in mind that currently, there are no intentions to conduct events where characters can obtain more Pokemon in the future.

Lastly, keep in mind that although your companion will surely prove an ally on your journey, they're also another mouth to feed...
How do characters understand each other? What about writing?

The Storyteller can see to it that some level of universal understanding is required. For characters who speak Japanese, for example, everything they hear and read will be interpreted into Japanese. The same goes for English speaking characters, or Hylian, or just about any standard language you can think of.

Not included in this translating service are languages that are uncommon in the world they hail from (an example of this would be the ancient runic languages in the Tales of series). These would remain untranslated, aside for those few characters who already speak them.
Are there any other limitations to this universal translation?

As a matter of fact, there is. Some languages simply don't work well with others, and in such circumstances, wordage per mile may...vary, somewhat.

This is especially true when it comes to the local languages upon the islands, where many of the words your character may know simply do not exist in the local dialects. How these words then translate may come across as rather odd; a name, for example, might equate to The Tall One, or The Smiling One. Common aspects of technology or modern day appliances may not even have a word at all.

We encourage players to play with this at their own direction, and will note when it comes into effect in particular locations.
How does my character get out of here?

You could always try swimming, if you're that eager.

The simple fact of the matter is that very little is known at this stage on why characters are here, never mind how they'd look to get out. Everyone has their own reasons to want to return home. It's up to these characters to figure out their purpose on this world, and just what needs to be done to leave.
My character can swim/fly/some other manner of getting through the islands quickly; how's them apples?

Pretty sweet, actually! Within our applications, we ask people to specify character powers, and in certain circumstances, we do request that certain powers be nerfed, such as powers of flight.

For those who are strong swimmers, we also hope you have trained specifically to take on feats greater than that of the English Channel. The waters around the islands can be extremely choppy at the best of times, and most have their own intricate coral systems just below the surface. Not to mention the sometimes aggressively territorial wildlife.
Is my character allowed to keep their powers? What kind of powers need to be nerfed?

In some cases powers may be perfectly fine to keep, while in others nullification or outright nerfing may take place. Examples of powers that would need to be dampened, if not outright nullified, include flying, teleportation, and time control. There are various reasons that nerfing needs to take place, one of the most important being exploration elements that would be difficult (if not impossible) to implement with characters aided by transportation-related abilities. Keep in mind that the power of an ability is not the only consideration for nerfing!

We encourage players to consider whether they feel a power should be dampened. The mods are perfectly willing to make suggestions based on the information supplied within applications. Additionally, please feel free to discuss with us any nerfs that you're not keen on, or don't feel are fair!

My character shares a body with another person/entity. Can I app both of them?

No. Characters who share a body not only come into conflict with our one character per canon rule, but also create conflict with our process for characters played by the same mun; as characters played by the same person can’t see each other, sharing a body would be difficult, if not impossible.
What timezone does LifeAftr operate on?

LifeAftr runs on Eastern Standard Time (GMT-4/5). All datelines, such as application cutoffs and reserve windows, coincide with the EST timezone.
Inhabitants
Who are the Deities of this land?

The Deities are mysterious spiritual forces that reside upon the islands, falling into two categories: Avatars, whose jurisdiction and area of power are limited to particular or singular islands, and Gods, whose influence can be felt no matter which island you go to.

Much like the ancient religious hierarchies seen throughout history, the Deities of LifeAftr play into various roles, though what roles they control specifically may change from island to island. Currently, the only known God is the Storyteller, one of the first Deities that characters are introduced to. You can read more about the other NPCs, divine and otherwise, on our NPCs page.
What do these Deities do?

The Deities' usual roles and responsibilities have to do with creating and upholding the world around them, as well as supplying certain resources that may make your character's stay just a little bit easier to handle. What each Deity has to offer varies, but in most situations, the supplies and tools that can be obtained from them may very well be part of what makes or breaks attempts to establish a new port on an island, or at least pave an easier path towards getting to live comfortably.

While the Deities typically have very little time to play house with mortals, do not presume that they aren't keeping an eye out on character's progression throughout their lands. And their interactions with each other. And NPCs. As the game progresses, which Deities are more lenient than others is likely to come to light, as some may be more inclined to turn a blind eye to wrongdoings than others...
Where are they located?

Island-specific Avatars can be found on their respective island, of course!

Physically, each Avatar is represented by a particular totem, images and statues that can be found in varying locations throughout their respective island. More often than not, an altar is located nearby at which characters can either make offerings, attempt communication, or if they're feeling particularly bold, threaten an Avatar into submission. Any altars found, which Avatar they belong to, and a link to what supplies that Avatar may offer can be found on the Locations Page.

As for where the Avatars actually reside, well...

Wouldn't you like to know.
Are there any other island inhabitants?

Island inhabitants? In our sandbox? It's more likely than you think!

There are an immense number of inhabitants that vary from island to island, from the more typical and humanoid tribes that serve the island Deities, to the more beastly variety. Interaction and trade with these races will be applicable, and certain circumstances may even introduce conflict between characters and the inhabitants of their current locations.
What about monsters?

Much like the information above, monsters vary from island to island, and may be less common in some circumstances than others.

What appears to be a monster to characters may actually turn out to be common wildlife, if only with special abilities. In other cases, monsters may be solely individualistic, and potentially impossible to kill. As with the Avatars, the Locations Page is your friend to knowing the local fauna in your area.
Where can I find more information about NPCs/monsters?

More information on the pantheon of Deities, tribes, races, and people can be found our NPCs page. And of course, our list of monsters and animals can be found in the Bestiary.
How do I interact with them?

Explore, explore, explore! With exploration comes the introduction of our RNG Exploration System, which allows for certain events to transpire in your character's travels.

Once specific tribes, races, or species have been introduced, it may be possible to implement them into your character's day to day life, and their common locations will be listed on the Locations Page. Local Avatars may help your character on their journey if offerings are made, or feats are completed in their name.

In addition to this, certain island occupants may be introduced at the start of each month in alignment with a certain event, or to assist in the exploration of new land. There’s plenty of variety, so don’t fret that your character will miss their chance.
Within the Story
What happens upon a character’s arrival to LifeAftr?

Typically, characters simply wake up somewhere or another; the shores of Ensō are the most common arrival point, but this will not always be the case. We will always be sure to detail the circumstances of the newest arrivals on our intro logs, as these may vary depending on which islands are available and what the state of them are.
What’s the IC/OOC time ratio?

One OOC day = one IC day.

We do, of course, allow and encourage backdating. Forward-dating is also generally fine, provided you're not jumping too far ahead of time. It always pays to check with a mod, just to be safe! We will always do our best to forewarn of events ahead of time, especially for those that could cause a change in priorities.
I want to explore everything! How do I do that?

That depends on the island! In certain areas, characters will have the ability to free roam, depending on whether or not the map is already completed. For larger areas, such as the main island, an RPG element comes into play.

Smaller to medium sized islands may have a fully established map upon character’s arrival, which will allow you to traverse wherever you wish, whenever you wish to! For more detailed exploration of these areas, however, you can make a Search Request to find valuable goods, get in a fight, or discover something truly mysterious.

For larger islands, such as the starting island of Ensō, a grid system has been implemented which makes discovery of new areas and the contents within completely random! Could you be the one to discover an Avatar’s altar? A highly coveted mana pool? A friendly group of island inhabitants- or perhaps not so friendly? With the Search Request system, it’s up to you to decide what fortune and misfortune may potentially befall your character- and what secrets they may uncover.
Is there a network?

As of November 20th, 2017, a network was introduced to the setting at [community profile] lifenet. Starting as a simple notice board, it was then updated to a voice network in March 2018- and as of May 30th, 2019, texting has also become available!
♆ Memorial Rock ♆

The original noticeboard was organized ICly by Severs-the-Threads, and has been decommissioned as of May 30th. The stone still remains, however, now inscribed with the name of all those who have previously ventured onto LifeAftr's shores... and have since returned home. Updates to this list occur every Friday, with the names of those now gone etched into the stone itself.

♆ The Stones of Farspeech ♆

Organized by Lup in March 2018, upgrades to the Stones have been made by Chip Araboa, introducing a texting network and emojis in May 2019. Since their introduction to the setting, the Stones of Far Speech are provided to characters upon arrival to the islands. Based on the DnD item, Stones of Far Speech allow characters to communicate via audio and text at any distance, so long as there is no purposeful, magical interference. Past this initial description, minor alterations and restrictions apply within game:
♆ For characters who are mute and/or deaf, consciously thinking of who they wish to speak to and what they would like to say will send their audio message in a nondescript voice, whilst deaf characters will find their Stone translating messages it receives into Braille. With the introduction of text, blind characters will also find texts translated into braille.

♆ It should be noted that Stones of Far Speech do not have an image or video option. In addition, there is no message bank for audio. If a character you are seeking to speak to doesn’t pick up, texting them would be your second (and last) resort.

When using voice, the Stones of Far Speech have two features. Characters can choose to speak with one person only, or send a live message to everyone at once. There is no option to filter messages to a select group of Far Stones. Individual conversations are concretely private unless your character is within earshot of someone using their Stone.

♆ As of May 30th, 2019, all Stones have been updated to include a square screen on their surface. This screen will provide User IDs when speaking to someone via voice, in addition to acting as the main hub for texting. For characters who require it, this information will appear as braille on the surface of the screen.

When using text, the Stones of Far Speech still do have limitations. You cannot attach anything to your texts, such as images, video, or voice clips. As with voice, one may only text a singular individual, or the island at large. Currently, there is no group texting option.
Please keep in mind that this system is open for continued improvement. Want to request video mode? Want the ability to send attachments with your texts? Most anything is possible- at a price. If at all unsure, contact the mods with your suggestion, and we’ll work with you to put it in place.

♆ The Calendar ♆

Requested by Ren in April 2018, an IC calendar sits to the immediate right of the memorial rock. It consists of a simple slab of stone jutting up from the ground at about four feet high. While its interface is somewhat crude, consisting of nothing more than the current month, number of days, checkmarks to the current date, and a space below for written notes, it is entirely self-sufficient. Of particular note, no year is included in the information. Characters are free to write in or erase events as they wish, though additions will always be wiped free with the passing of each new month.

The IC calendar can be found and edited here.
Are food/water/resources limited, or will my character always find something nearby?

At the start of each month, supplies may wash ashore, or a friendly trader close by may be willing to offer trade for other goods or services. These supplies are not endless, however, and should they run out... well, how good are you at hunting and gathering? The world is rife with game and edible fruits and vegetables, but take care something doesn't make a meal out of you instead. The Locations Page gives an overall picture for generic goods available in certain locations; for more valuable or nutritious goods, adventurers will need to seek them out. In addition, curious green pools can be found on every island. For characters outside of the know, the Storyteller will happily confirm for them that the water is, in fact, highly nutritious. These pools may serve as a good source of sustenance when all else fails. More details regarding these pools can be found on the Settings Page.
What are the functions of a mana pool?

Other than providing an alternative source of nutrition, as mentioned above, the mana pools scattered around LifeAftr come with many functions. Resting nearby will not only rejuvenate organic life, but it is the only known method of recharging sigils for mechanical or otherwise inscribed characters. Additionally, mana pools serve as a method of fast travel as characters uncover more of the archipelago.

Of course, one of the first things the Storyteller always mentions upon the discussion of mana pools is their dislike for those who bathe in it. Your character is free to do so regardless, but there may be quick consequences...

More details regarding mana pools can be found on the Settings Page.
My character would like to build a home/hospital/business! How do they do this?

Anyone can look to build a house or amenity if they choose to, however, a character's capacity to build anything relies on three things: the resources available, their own skills in construction, and time.

As characters progress through the game, more and more resources will become available to them. However, much of what they can use would be obtained through adventuring and gathering. Wanting to build a hospital with fully functioning recreational areas and high tech equipment isn't viable from the get go. In fact, potentially, it might not be viable at all.

Likewise, a character who has no real knowledge of building is more likely to need more materials; mistakes are made, after all, and sometimes they can't simply be corrected. The amount of characters working on a project and the level of skill they have as a whole can also affect the amount of materials used, as well as the time it takes for a project to be completed.

At this time, a designated cluster of islets has been designated as housing space for characters to build on to their hearts' content, though they are certainly welcome to build wherever they so desire. For more information on housing, check the Housing Page. Further information on buildings and equipment creation can be found on our Items Request Page, and examples of player-created resources can be found on our Player Projects Page.
How's the weather?

Really, why don't you see for yourself? A monthly calendar will specify a general outline of the weather in that week, as well as including awesome tidbits such as event dates, the TDM, AC, and more!
Where can I find more information on the setting?

More information about the setting can be found on the Settings Page.
Can my character learn/obtain magic from others?

In instances where a character wishes to gain powers in-game, they may be able learn them from other characters apt at it -- if they come from a canon where such powers exist, and/or they have displayed a leaning or ability for it themself. This includes magic, which average humans would not be able to learn. They would, however, still be able to utilize any magical items or weapons that may come into their possession, provided said object doesn't rely on channeling the character's own magical power.
Events
What kind of events are likely to occur?

As with any game, we are keen to provide a large variety of events and plotlines throughout LifeAftr's...well, lifespan.

Wider events include those that may effect characters for a long duration, such as an island wide plot that continues to develop throughout the month, or months. These may include a series of mini events, daily updates, and player elected events, in which players may volunteer their characters for various tasks or pitfalls.

Smaller events may be those that occur over a period of a few hours or a week, and may have significant effects upon characters in that duration of time. Some events, such as Story Telling, occur monthly, and provide players with the chance to gain certain items or benefits. Others may occur naturally upon the island your character is currently situated upon.
How can I submit a player event/plot?

Player events and suggestions are absolutely allowed, and can be made here! When writing an event for submissions, we simply ask that you keep in mind three basic guidelines:
I) INCLUSIVITY
Objectively speaking, does the central conflict/experiences/features of the event include as many characters as possible? If it can't, do you have an alternative option to entertain those left out?

II) ACCESSIBILITY Can just about anyone participate in this event easily? Alternatively, is there an easy out for players who aren’t inclined to join, or are not available to participate?

III) APPROPRIATENESS
Does this event fit into the overall theme/situation presented in LifeAftr?
When writing an event, it's important to give opportunities to players so their actions and decisions have an impact on the outcome, as opposed to being reduced to spectators. Encourage your fellow players to engage by making their characters actions relevant and impactful! Pleasing everyone may be impossible, but offering an event that entertains as many people as possible will increase its likelihood of being implemented.
Why is it taking so long for my event to occur?

Your event suggestion may be taking a while because other events (either generated to move the game's overall plot or those suggested by other players) may have been scheduled to occur prior to your suggestion.

When suggestions are made, we will do our best to ensure we contact you to let you know where we can schedule the event in. If your event is time-sensitive, such as a desire to have the event occur during a specific season or at the group's current location, make sure to notify mods when you submit your suggested event.
Why was my event rejected?

If your event or player plot is rejected for any reason, we will always be sure to contact you and let you know why. Aside from not meeting the above requirements for submitting an event or player plot, other reasons may include similarities to an event that’s been submitted by another player, or it may run contrary to certain established factors of the plot that have yet to be revealed.
When do Test Drive Memes occur?

Test drive memes are set to appear once every month. They will typically go up on the 14th of each month, operating on an EST calendar and timezone.
Can my Test Drive Meme threads be canon in game?

Yes, they can. Test drive memes, along with certain other events in game, occur on the island of Mu, which is a space that exists both in the physical and metaphysical sense. Characters can fade in and out on a whim, and dissipate before they engage with the setting proper. Test drive meme threads are not required to be game canon, but they have the potential to be, if you so choose.

Characters who participate in test drive memes prior to their arrival can be eligible for test drive rewards, which are items they'll find on their person upon their arrival into the game proper. We do leave an opening on the application submission form for those who wish to sign up for test drive rewards, but please be advised that you are only eligible for a reward if you participated in the test drive that corresponds to that month's application round. Also, keep in mind that only threads started prior to applications opening will be eligible for rewards.
Game Mechanics
Are the islands doing anything to the characters?

Whilst LifeAftr is geared to bring a certain amount of mystery, there are a few aspects that players can be assured will NOT have a place in the game's environment outside of potential, short term events:
[ ♆ ] Induced amnesia. Characters will retain the memories of their canon, or any history specified within their application.

[ ♆ ] Physical changes. There will be no growth of additional appendages or changes to characters physically outside of player control, such as deciding your character needs a new scar. Or that their hand isn’t as necessary as they think.

[ ♆ ] Psychological changes. Past the character development you decide upon and changes made through development with CR, characters will not be forced to change their ways, though destructive behavior can be punished by the Deities.
How does aging work on the islands?

Time stands still for characters. Their hair and nails may grow and injuries may heal over time as necessary, but they physically will not age. In addition to this, characters with ovaries will cease ovulating, making biological reproduction impossible. Say goodbye to Aunt Flo!
I play two characters who might logically interact with each other. How do I avoid playercest?

It's a small world with limited resources, so it's understandable in certain situations your characters may end up in close proximity to one another. In these instances, however, character A and B won't see or hear each other at all!

For both, the odd instance of seeing a companion speaking to seemingly empty air is accompanied by the sensation of...something being there. A ghost? Something beyond their mortal comprehension? Who knows!

Well...the Storyteller might. But don't hold out for a satisfying answer.

Of course, as we heavily encourage avoiding scenarios where you have multiple characters present, this mechanic should be used as a last resort. Rest assured that even with IC acknowledgement, the ability to playercest will not be implemented in LifeAftr.
What is the policy on fourth-walling?

At this time, we discourage players from partaking in fourth-walling others, though we understand that it is a mechanic utilized within some canons. Be reasonable and respectful when approaching the subject, and make sure that clear consent between all parties has been obtained before fourth-walling another character. In circumstances where fourth-walling is escalated to the mods, this will be the first thing we ask for.
What happens if I hiatus?

When your hiatus begins, your character(s) disappear entirely, at least from the perspective of your fellow islanders. At the end of your hiatus, they will then reappear at the nearest altar/temple/standing stone to the main group, without any awareness of how much time has passed. In fact to your character, it might seem as though they had been transported instantaneously to another location.

In some circumstances, if you request it, the mods may leave some extra details on your hiatus post...
What if I need to drop?

Sometimes life gets in the way, or a game doesn’t click with you the way you hoped it would. That’s okay, and the opportunity to re-app is always open to you!

As for your character, you may opt to have them lost on the island, or you’re more than welcome to discuss details ahead of time with the mods if you’d like to go out with somewhat of a bang. In other situations, the Storyteller will certainly opt to send home those whose story is at its end.

The belongings of dropped characters will remain where they were left for a period of two months, during which other characters may re-appropriate them if desired. After two months have passed, give or take a few days, wily Slypers will have sniffed the loot out and taken it for themselves, never to be seen again. Given the dropped character returns within this window, their belongings will be spared - if they're re-apped by the same player!

At present, there is no foolproof IC system for tracking characters that have dropped; should their CR not announce it or put their names down on the Bulletin Rock, this information may not be widespread IC knowledge. Please keep this in mind when salvaging dropped characters' belongings!
What happens if my character dies?

When a character dies, notification of their death should be recorded on our Deaths Page, at which point the player may decide upon what their character will lose or gain upon their return. Penalties apply for a one month period, which starts on the date of your character's revival.

While LifeAftr has many elements of survival, please note that any more than three deaths within a six month period will result in your character permanently dying in game. Be sure to let your character live a little, too.

In some circumstances, pre-meditated events may have a higher chance of death, in which case special penalties of a shorter timeframe will apply. Such events will be case by case, and any changes to death penalties during these periods will be noted in the event posts themselves.

For a comprehensive guide to LifeAftr's death mechanics, visit the Deaths Page.
How do canon updates work?

One moment, your character is still on the island, perhaps with others, possibly alone. In the next, they've returned home, where the memories of the island rapidly and within a manner of seconds recede in a moment of disorientation. Once the character has experienced the desired amount of time or events in order to canon update, they find themselves back on the island at the nearest altar/temple/standing stone to either their former location or closest to the rest of the group. The process may take mere hours or days, depending on player preference, and is handled like a hiatus.

OOCly, canon updates may be handled on a case by case basis. Ideally, the mods would be looking for a general summary of what has transpired within this new time period, and how this may change characterization. CRAU characters are applicable for canon updates.
What's the AC like?

Activity Checks come in two (2!) flavors at LifeAftr: compulsory and non-compulsory.

Compulsory AC is specifically conducted by the mods at the end of every month. A warning list of characters who have not sufficiently tagged in the past month will be posted, and if no activity is seen within a two month period, a character will be swept from the game without further notification.

In addition to this, mods will be keeping an eye out on the length of threads. We understand that sometimes, life gets in the way; however, multiple threads in which only one response is made will be noted. Acceptable AC requires at least one thread with 3 comments from yourself or more, keeping in mind that this level of AC will not be accepted every month. Please be fair to your other players when considering the level of activity you put into LifeAftr.

Compulsory Activity Check requires no input from players; as of May 1st, 2018, all AC is conducted via ACsavior. The only requirement is to tag!

The following standards apply to the Compulsory Activity Check:
[ ♆ ] Mods check the character tags for activity from the month the check is taking place from only. Backtagging from prior months is not included.

[ ♆ ] Mods may also follow up in instances where a trend of tagging only the same, small pool of characters can be seen. In these instances, we will likely contact you privately, and may ask to see threads with other characters in the following month!

[ ♆ ] Hiatuses of one week or more will exempt you from AC. Keep in mind that, again, we will be checking for trends in this area, and may follow up with you if there’s any concerns.

In the event that a network becomes available to characters, only threads made within the network comm are registered for AC purposes. Threads within IC inboxes will not count towards AC, as we cannot track these posts.
What's the non-compulsory AC like?

Non-compulsory AC is entirely optional, and works from an IC standpoint to provide players with both IC and OOC benefits. In the last week of each month, the Storyteller will summon characters from across the world to their altar. They simply ask for one thing: tales of daring heroism, enthralling romance, suspenseful tension, and utter hilarity the characters have gone through in the past month.

All stories may be told verbally, or for those artistically inclined, through drawings via the Chamber of Glyphs.

Within LifeAftr's first month, characters will be capable of supplying stories from their home world, or other places they have been. Afterwards, these stories will be required to come from the threads that your character has done... although they might wish to embellish the premise a little. One tiger? No no, I swear! There were FIFTY of them, honest!

Characters who tell such tales may find themselves gifted by the Storyteller for their superior wit and verve. OOCly, mods will use this information as a way to confirm player investment in the game, increasing the chances of players being approached to have their character hold key parts within future events and plots. There is no limit to how far back your stories date in LifeAftr, as long as they actually happened - if you only finished a backtagged thread from six months ago, you can absolutely tell that story if you wish!

Although do keep in mind that a character may also be punished for stretching the truth a little too much... or for lying outright.
But my character isn't the type to tell stories!

Well shame on them, then! Everyone likes a good story, don't they?

ICly, it's understandable for characters not to want to share stories, although witnessing others gaining prizes and advantages for doing so could be quite the incentive. In other cases, a character may simply feel compelled to share. When a god requests a story you give them a story, by...god.

Non-compulsory AC also ties into our item requests system, in which the Storyteller will trade items and favors for stories. In cases where you ICly cannot find reason for your character to participate but still wish to gain access to storytelling benefits, you may opt to have the Storyteller visit your character within their dreams and obtain a story directly.
How long is a story good for?

After participating in non-compulsory AC, the favor attached to your story is good indefinitely! There is no expiration date on favors, so feel free to cash them in at your convenience. Keep in mind that more elaborate requests might require more favors, so it might even benefit you to save a few up...
What types of Item Requests can I make?

At this time, the Storyteller will only grant requests that involve the physical gain of items. Do you need some materials to rebuild a bridge? They will happily provide you with a hammer or nails or whatever else you may need, given you are prepared to part with a favor. Actually reconstructing the bridge itself? Goodness, no... they are the Storyteller, not the Architect!
Why can’t my character request a canon item or companion, such as a Pokemon?

If an item or creature being requested is from another character’s canon, and wouldn’t be known to your own, they will be incapable of requesting it for themself. Link from the Ocarina of Time, for example, could not request a Pikachu - in a similar fashion, Ash Ketchum wouldn’t be capable of requesting the Ocarina of Time.
Applications
Does LifeAftr have a character cap?

We have currently placed the character cap at 100 characters. Additionally, a cast cap of 10% the overall is in effect. At present, this means that all canons are currently capped at a 10 character maximum.

In the long term, a cap increase will depend upon continued interest, as well as the potential impact on the mod workload, as we wish to ensure as much interactivity as possible.
How many characters am I allowed to have in game?

We do ask that players limit themselves to two characters initially, as LifeAftr is a world intended to supply characters with a whole lot to do no matter the month. We also want to ensure that our mod team remains capable of providing each individual player with the attention and opportunities they deserve!

You may request to app a third character after having two characters in game for at least three months. Please keep in mind that your activity with two characters will be assessed prior to permission being given for a third.
How many characters can I app at one time?

From the very beginning, you are free to apply for two characters.

However, if this is your first time applying to LifeAftr, we do encourage you to consider applying for one to start with; give yourself time to test the waters!
Are app challenges allowed?

We do not allow application or reserve challenges at this time. It is first come, first served.
Can I app multiple characters from the same series?

As the character cap for players has been set very low, we do not allow players to app multiple characters from a single canon. This is also to discourage the need for playercest in the event of someone apping two characters who are more likely to have interactions with each other.
Can I app a duplicate of a character already in game?

We do not allow duplicates of characters into LifeAftr. This also applies in circumstances where duplicates occur in canon. For example, should Cloud Strife from FF7 already be in play, Cloud from the Kingdom Hearts franchise would not be appable.

The exception to this rule is situations where canons specifically deal with alternate versions of characters, such as Luke and Asch from the Tales of series. Situations where characters are canonically aware of duplicates are also acceptable, such as series that delve into alternate realities. One such example of this is the Doctor's multiple incarnations in Doctor Who.
What about AU versions of characters?

LifeAftr does not accept applications for fan-created AUs. Canon AUs are acceptable, such as Another Day in The World Ends With You. Keep in mind that the rule of no character duplicates still applies.

CRAUs of canon and original characters are allowed. However, we do ask that you use our CRAU application form at the time of applying to the game, as additional information is required. Your character's CRAU should not span more than two previous games.
Can I app a character with little to no background information?

We are accepting applications for silent protagonists and lesser characters with little to no background! If you feel that apping this character requires an immense amount of headcanon, we do ask that you use our 'Lesser Background' form for your application, as what we expect in comparison to general applications does differ.

Silent or malleable protagonists are defined as protagonists who have no direct lines, or who present the player with dialogue options that essentially shape the character's personality. An example would be Link from the Zelda series, because while it is implied that he speaks to other characters, we never get to read his lines. On the other end of the spectrum, a Persona protagonist would also be considered a silent or malleable protagonist, because although they have written lines, it's up to the player to choose which ones they say.

For characters or canons which require a large amount of headcanon about world-building or relationships, check with players already in game to sort out the main details before apping. Communication is key, and we do expect that established casts be kept in the loop about circumstances in your application that have the potential to change how the main cast is played.
Can I app a character with little to no English source material?

We do ask that any characters apped into LifeAftr have at least one reasonably detailed English source of translation. Whilst some of our mods are multilingual, the material your character is drawing from should be accessible to other players as well as the mod team.
Can I app a character from newly released canons?

In consideration of spoilers for those who have yet to experience it, we have implemented a buffer period of two months from the release date before newly released canons are appable. After these two months, any character from the series may be apped. Please remain considerate and warn fellow players of spoilers where appropriate.

In instances where a canon is still in the process of updating, such as The Adventure Zone or a manga series, we ask that you keep in mind the same consideration for your fellow players. If the latest update was released two days ago, it may be better to wait prior to playing from this canon point. At this time, we ask that you only apply for episodes after they have been out for one month.

Canons to which this rule applies will be listed here for your convenience.
Can I app a character from historical fiction or characters based off of real people?

Characters such as these will be considered on a case by case basis. In general, we do not accept applications for characters who were real people. Fictional interpretations of historical or mythological figures, such as Thor from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, are generally acceptable - in essence, they must be sufficiently different from the historical or mythological figure they are based upon. If there's any confusion or blurring of lines, don't hesitate to ask the mod team for clarification!
Is there an age limit?

There is currently no age limit for characters who can be apped in game. However, we strongly advise players to consider the appropriateness of the character they wish to apply.

Child characters who have reasonably been through more than any average adult can most likely endure a survivalist setting. Alternatively, a child character such as Nina from Full Metal Alchemist would struggle to survive without heavy support.

In addition to this, characters are required to navigate terrain that has the potential be hostile and difficult to traverse. There is no assistance available outside of supportive CR. If you're considering a character and are unsure as to their suitability within LifeAftr, please feel free to discuss this with the mods.
My application was rejected and I’d like to try again. What can I do to ensure I’m accepted?

We're happy to know you're still keen on being a part of LifeAftr, and will do our best to assist where needed.

Upon rejecting an app, the mod team will always tell you why, and we also offer you the option of requesting a private response detailing what aspects of your previous app should be revised. We greatly encourage you to take up that offer in this circumstance, as what may be acceptable by one mod team can wind up being unacceptable in another. We all have differing opinions on what meets or falls short of certain expectations.

On top of this, take the time to review our application rundown page, if you haven't already. Not only is each application style covered in detail - as well as some pointers on the easiest ways to control the layout - a general summary of just what we're looking for in each section is also supplied, which will include links to previous apps that have gone above and beyond meeting all the criteria (once applications have been opened and processing has begun).

If you have any further concerns from there, feel free to contact our mod team, and we will attempt to assist you as best we can.
What if I want to re-app a character?

In the case of re-apping a character that was previously played by another person, the character will arrive with no memory of LifeAftr. If you are re-apping a character you previously played in game, you will have the option of retaining their memories; in this instance, please use the CRAU application template when re-applying. Even if the changes are small, it helps us to know what your character will be retaining.

In this case, no time will have passed for them since the time they were dropped and the moment they return. They will be in precisely the same condition they were when they were dropped. If the character dies as their drop excuse, they additionally will have to arrive with the requisite death penalty in play.

If you are seeking to re-app a character due to the changes of a canon-update being too extensive for an update through our Canon Update Page, these same rules apply.

Oh, I'll most likely be back with more if I can remember them. xD

1. Gotcha!

2. I wondered if that might be the case, which is why I wanted to doublecheck first. <3

3. I kinda like the idea of her having a sigil that allows her to do the thing. I'm assuming it'd be kind of like the ones where they need to recharge it by the mana pools? Or is that something else entirely? xD

Good to know!

And I thought of another one~

If I'm currently playing her in another game, would I use the straight-up canon app, or the one for importing a canon? I wasn't really planning on using "other-game" things for her here, but I figured I'd double check before I started the app.

Alrighty! That's what I thought, but I wanted to make sure. <3
